Thanks largely to continual and expanding business from Encirc Glass – the new name of Quinn Glass – more than 20 million Smartpads from Loadhog have now been cleaned in its Sheffield-based state-of-the art washplant, doubling the number achieved four years after its installation in 2008. Manufactured by the returnable transit packaging innovator, the Smartpad – an integral component of its Queen’s Award-winning Smartstak glass containment system – has been utilised by Encirc since its inception to move its bottles more safely, cost-effectively and hygienically.
The Sheffield washplant was the first not to use detergents and achieves its class leading standards using environmentally friendly methodology. The reverse osmosis water treatment removes contamination and residue on the pad’s surface and the UV light chamber sanitises the Smartpads ensuring they conform to the glass industry’s stringent hygiene requirements after every trip. The Loadhog pooling service includes the collection of dirty pads, washing and the re-distribution of clean ones.
The new reusable Smartcap, designed to replace cardboard capping trays, is also washed using the same environmentally friendly process, eliminating contamination caused by cardboard, especially when wet. Smartpad users benefit from its unique wave edge profile which enables glass to be transported in a more stable manner, reducing losses and eliminating the need for horizontal banding. In addition to the state of the art washplant in Sheffield, a second pooling operation has been established in Portugal to service Loadhog’s Iberian Smartstak customers more effectively, with the same wash process and service.
