You may have heard about the new tax for plastic packaging, which is coming into place in April 2022 in the UK. But what does this mean for you?
The new tax applies to plastic packaging produced in, or imported into the UK that does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. This means that businesses who manufacture or import plastic packaging components or import packaged goods into the UK will be charged the tax if applicable.
The plastic tax is calculated at £200 per tonne for packaging with less than 30% recycled plastic.
The tax is being put in place to lower the amount of single use plastic on the earth and divert it away from ending up in the ocean and landfill. Therefore, providing a clearer goal for businesses to use more recycled material in their production and use of plastic packaging, will help to contribute towards a more circular economy.
